In 1982, a unique event took place in the Tasmanian wilderness that changed theenvironmental and political landscape of Australia forever. The fledgling Tasmanian Wilderness Society (TWS) ran a mass, non-violent, direct-action campaign to stopa dam being built and save the last wild river in Tasmania -- the Franklin.The campaign grew at a phenomenal pace. It saw over 1400 arrests in the SouthWest Tasmanian Wilderness, a change of Federal Government, and a High Courtcase that finally determined to stop the dam and protect the World Heritage listedFranklin and Gordon rivers.This bookreveals some of the untold stories of the direct action that took place on theFranklin and Gordon rivers and in the surrounding forests. It pays respect to thosewho took the journey Up River and fills a gap in the historical accounts of this event.Focussing on just one part of the overall campaign, the Up Riverstories look behind the media images of the time and tell how they actually cameabout. They reveal how the Up River mob -- a diverse group of activists under theauspices of the TWS -- organised the logistics of the campaign on the River: ran the camps, drove the boats, guided folk along the tracks to get arrested,and, after the blockade ended, maintained an ongoing presence to monitordestruction throughout the summer and into the cold heart of winter.
