Le vaste travail de synthèse du professeur Armand Duchâteau permet d'appréhender, dans son contexte historique et sociologique, depuis le XIIIe siècle, un grand art de cour, celui de l'ancien royaume du Bénin. Maîtres de la technique de la fonte à cire perdue, les artistes ont réalisé des oeuvres de tendance naturaliste d'une rare perfection : des figures de nains, des têtes commémoratives, des bas-reliefs où sont fixés les rites et cérémonies de la vie à la cour. Ces trésors royaux, en ivoire ou en bronze, occupent une place privilégiée dans les arts "classiques" de l'Afrique noire.
