En zone sèche, comme en zone humide, nous y relevons les densités démographiques les plus impressionnantes de l'Afrique sub-saharienne, notamment au Sud-Ouest, en pays yoruba, et surtout chez les Ibo du Sud-Est. C'est au Nigeria également que se sont rencontrés un certain nombre de courants historiques fondamentaux. Au nord, la savane soudanaise fut ouverte de tous temps aux circuits commerciaux transahariens, porteurs de formes culturelles ; la région de la confluence du Niger et de la Bénué est une antique plate-forme de migrations, de trafics et de conquêtes. Il n'est pas étonnant qu'avec la richesse particulière de sa géographie physique et humaine, le Nigeria ait été un milieu très favorable à l'épanouissement d'expressions artistiques éminemment diverses. Les œuvres de la collection Mourtala Diop, exposées au Musée de Dakar, reflètent cette remarquable diversité."
