The Ut pictura poesis controversy in eighteenth-century England and Germany

Examining eighteenth-century aesthetic theories, this study challenges the view that Horace's concept of ut pictura poesis was unchallenged before Lessing's Laokoon, analysing the growing opposition to the idea during this period.
