brief_description
To recapitulate some of the original aspects of Sex and the Empire That Is No More, here Matory makes a case for the existence of meta-tropes of gender in Yoruba spirit possession, understanding these embodiments as deeply embedded in Oyo politics. Further, Matory argues that these meta-tropes allow for the description of behavior, speech, and general qualities of orisha possession in relation to the different "roads" of an orisha, in this case, for songo and yemoja sects, and the sociopolitical ramifications for the (re)emergence of such. [By Otero, Solimar in The International Journal of African Historical Studies]
