brief_description
'The author's chief aim is exemplified in the provision of classified groups of paired objects on the merits or shortcomings of which as "visual art" Everyman is invited to exercise his own judgment, and thus gradually "to educate himself toward a state of real visual discernment". In an introduction (rather incongruously illustrated) he is warned against the facile adoption of other people's views, the craze for collecting, the lure of eminent names, obsession with s abject-matter or historical interest, and other factors which warp or prevent the free exercise of personal judgment' -- John Waterer's review, Journal of the Royal Society of Arts Vol. 100, No. 4876 (27TH JUNE, 1952), pp. 566-567.
