brief_description
Starting in July 2016, MONA conducted an experiment on the use of optical aids in seventeenth-century painting in collaboration with Tim Jenison of the 2013 documentary film Tim's Vermeer. This is an experiment in which MONA has no 'hound in the hunt' (vested interest in the outcome), but aims to promote discussion about Vermeer and other painters' potential use of optical aids, such as the camera obscura and Jenison's device, the comparator mirror. Presenting arguments both for and against the use of the comparator mirror, the fascinating book accompanying this experiment pits Jenison's engaging hypothesis against the received wisdom by painter and Vermeer enthusiast Jonathan Janson.
