This is a re-issue of the 1952 edition, which has been in constant demand over the intervening years. "Australia,' says the the author, 'is the small house. Ownership of one is as inevitable and unquestionable a goal of the average Australian as marriage.' The book is the story of the Australian home - the small house, its builders and its occupiers. Australia has more of them per head of population than other nations, and has maintained a higher standard of living in them. Collectively, they are an outstanding achievement; but individually they have been prey to thoughtless habits and fickle fancies. The author summarizes his story, from 1788 to the present day, as 'a material triumph and an aesthetic calamity'. Readers will thoroughly enjoy the combination of informative detail and quiet humour, and the architectural features of a house, a street, or a suburb, which have hitherto simply been 'different', will gain an added significance and interest. --from back cover.
